How can plants help us remember? This hands-on workshop will explore the life and work of artist Romare Bearden (b. 1911, Charlotte, NC; d. 1988, New York, NY), particularly his relationship to and representation of plants and the Conjure Women in his life. While learning about Bearden, attendees will explore the artist’s favorite medium—collage—and make their own collages inspired by personal and collective memory. Registration is recommended.
This workshop is part of our ongoing Deep-Rooted collaboration with the Broad Art Museum, where art and plants intertwine in a conversation about the extraordinary ways our natural world has influenced art and human societies throughout history.
This event is offered in connection with We Are This Land: Meditations on the Great American Experiment. On view at Broad Aug. 22, 2026–Mar. 14, 2027, We Are This Land brings together artists who invite us to reflect on our history, consider our present, and imagine brighter futures.
