The Beal Scholars Internship Program is a mentored experience for MSU undergraduate students from any discipline. Scholars work with mentors, garden staff, and partners across campus and the community to implement a chosen project that aims to benefit the garden by contributing to our mission and annual goals.

Mission: Beal Botanical Garden and Campus Arboretum illuminates the interconnectedness of people, plants, and place through learning, research, and stewardship.

Project Description:

Beal Scholar - Avian Migration Monitoring

The Beal Botanical Garden Scholars program seeks an enthusiastic undergraduate student with an interest in ornithology to assist with a project monitoring migratory bird populations. The student will deploy and maintain acoustic monitoring equipment (Moth monitors), identify bird species from recorded vocalizations, and compile and manage monitoring data for research and conservation purposes.

Responsibilities

Field Monitoring

• Deploy and retrieve Moth acoustic monitoring units at designated field locations.
• Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of monitoring equipment.
• Download and organize audio recordings from field units.
• Maintain accurate field notes and equipment logs.
• Follow established protocols for safe and effective fieldwork.

Bird Identification and Data Processing

• Review audio recordings to identify migratory bird species by song and call.
• Verfiy species identifications using appropriate software and reference materials.
• Compile, organize, and maintain databases of avian detections.
• Assist with data quality control and record verification.
• Summarize monitoring results and assist with report preparation.

Experience Sought

• Current undergraduate student in Wildlife Biology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Forestry, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Strong interest in birds and avian ecology.
• Ability to work independently and responsibly in field settings.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
• Basic computer proficiency, including spreadsheet software.
• Flexible work schedule, approximately 10-20 hours per week.
• Driver's license is required.
